Beta Tester Guide

Thanks for helping test AncientX. The game is playable, but it is not finished: this page tells you what to expect, what we most need tested, and how to report what breaks.

This is a beta test, not a release

AncientX is a RuneScape 2012-era (revision 718) private server with a lot of new content added recently, including 182 scripted quests and areas brought over from Old School RuneScape. Much of it has not been play-tested end to end yet. You will find bugs, stuck quest steps and unfinished corners. That's expected, and it's why we're running a beta.

Your quests and XP carry over to the full release; items are reset (anything you paid for is kept), and bug-bounty coins are paid back at launch. Read the wipe policy for the details.

Getting started

  1. Register a forum account. Your forum username and password are your game login.
  2. Download the beta client for Windows (about 170 MB unzipped). Java is built in, so there is nothing else to install.
  3. Unzip it anywhere, open the AncientX folder and run AncientX.exe. If Windows SmartScreen warns about an unknown publisher, choose More info → Run anyway.
  4. Pick a world. World 1 is the main beta world.
  5. On the first start the client downloads the game cache. This can take a few minutes, and the first area loads can be slow.
  6. Log in and pick a game mode. The login screen and the chatbox both show which beta build you're on. Please include it in your reports.

What we most want tested

How to report a bug

  1. Join the AncientX Discord and go to #report-a-bug.
  2. Type /bug report and fill in the title, what happened and how to make it happen again, your in-game name (RSN) and how serious it is.
  3. Attach a screenshot. It's required, and your username has to be visible in it. Reports without one are turned down automatically. You can add up to two more images.
  4. The bot replies privately with a report id. Check on it any time with /bug status.

Bug bounty: staff check every report against the game. If your report is accepted, the bounty (in-game coins) goes into your bank the next time you log in. Duplicate, unreproducible and not-a-bug reports are declined, with the reason.

A good report says what you expected, what actually happened and the exact steps to repeat it. One bug per report, please.

Found an exploit, such as a dupe, free items or a way to hurt other players? Report it with /bug report only. Don't post it in public channels, and don't use it.

Known issues

No need to report these. We already know about them.

Wipe policy

During the beta
If a serious bug forces an emergency reset during beta, we'll restore what the launch rules below protect (quests, XP, bounties). We'll announce any wipe in Discord first, unless it's an emergency.
When the full game launches
You keep your quests and your XP (every skill level and quest you complete in beta carries over). Items are reset - inventory, bank and equipment start fresh - except anything you paid for, which is kept.
Your login
Your forum/website account isn't touched by a game wipe.
Bug bounties
Coins are items, so the launch reset clears them - but every bounty you earned is recorded and paid back the first time you log in to the full game. Bounty bonuses (a week of membership or the $5 donor voucher) carry over the same way.
Purchases
None. The real-money store (Squeal spins, donator packs, membership, credits) is closed for the whole beta and opens after it, so there is nothing to lose to a wipe. Normal in-game shops work as usual. Planned store items are previewed at /store and /marketplace.
